Còsagach ~ Self-care & Nature Soul Spa

Self-care & Nature Retreat for widows and widowers, 21-26 February 2021

As are all of our soul spas, this week is all about self-care and re-treating yourself. Yoga, walks, delicious food and drink, creative writing, painting, printmaking and other creative things are on offer whenever you feel like it.

The Hebrides are beautiful at any time of year! The still quite dark months are a good time for taking another wee break, one that is totally dedicated to self-care and enjoyment, without any pressures. The stunning natural environment of Calgary Bay with its white beach and inspiring art trail, the tasteful spaces that are our accommodation, and the art gallery which will be our yoga and creative studio all offer the ideal surroundings for exploring things we may want to have in our lives going forward. While the elements do their thing outside – they can be wild in Scotland! – we’ll sit by the cosy woodstove, hot drink in hand, and chat, write, read, or just be quiet.

The word Còsagach is the Scottish Gaelic word for being snug, sheltered and cosy….just what we need during the darker times of the year.

Optional programme

We’ll put together a light touch programme of yummy things and, as usual, everything is optional. It’s totally up to you where you want to join in. This is what I (Ute, founder of Fire & Rain) have planned with my co-host Sarah (yoga & creative writing teacher):

Hiking & exploring – walking allows us to really see, feel and smell the stunning environments of this island location. We will venture out on mindful walks and explore the natural surroundings. Walks last 1-3 hours. On one of the days a local nature guide will introduce us to Mull’s landscapes and wildlife on a private minibus tour.

Reflection and mindfulness – mindfulness is a kind way of being in the here and now. The advice grieving people often get is to just take one day at a time. And it makes sense. But sometimes you can only bear looking at one hour at a time, or even one minute. Mindfulness and living in the moment isn’t a complicated science but very simple, really. We will offer some simple tools and exercises to help you lean into this approach to living. We’ll also bring along our library of books and resources for you to rummage around in.

Yoga – yoga has helped us on our own journeys and the soul spa location is ideal for some mindful exercise. Join us on the mat in the mornings when Sarah, a qualified yoga teacher, will guide us through feelgood moves to wake up the body. Mats and blankets will be available. None of the sessions require previous experience and you don’t have to be particularly flexible or anything.

Creative writing & other creative stuff – you don’t need to be an artist and even if you think you have no creative bone in your body we can guarantee that you’ll be enjoying some or all of the creative activities we’ve built into the break. The beach alone offers beautiful materials, and we’ll bring along others so you can create memory objects and more. There will be creative writing sessions and we’ve quite a few other tasty surprises in store for you to get your creative juices flowing.

Very importantly, there will be plenty time to relax and drift….

Thank you all for this amazing experience! To be with like minded people helped me realize I am not alone in my grief. I have learned to express myself and will always be grateful for the support from everyone. We came together as strangers and will leave as friends. I am allowed. Cathy

Location & accommodation

Mull (Scottish Gaelic: Muile, pronounced [ˈmulʲə]) is the second largest island of the Inner Hebrides (after Skye), off the west coast of Scotland. It has an incredible coastline of around 300 miles and an area of 338 square miles. The highest mountain on Mull is Ben More, with 966 metres the highest mountain in the area. Winter on Mull is beautiful and dramatic with iconic wildlife, dynamic ever-changing landscapes and some of the darkest skies in Europe. Angry seas, moody skies and constantly changing light patterns make us feel closer to the elements. For information on how to get to there please check out the practicalities pages.

We’ve secured three adjoining properties in one of the most stunning locations in Scotland – Calgary Bay. They offer eco-friendly accommodation which is also very cosy, tasteful and charming. Calgary has a woodland sculpture walk and an art gallery, just up the hill from the white sands of Calgary beach.

Throughout the houses, you will find unique handcrafted local furniture, beautiful limestone tiles, woodburning stoves and restored pine floors. To add an extra touch of luxury there are also two saunas.
